Approximately 70% (or 8.6 billion litres), of Canada’s annual production of propane is exported because of the lack of domestic demand.
Propane is non-toxic and in its natural form, and odourless. Odourant is only added at the point of manufacture to ensure that any leaks are readily detected.
Propane is stored and handled as a liquid under pressure. The vessels are designed and engineered with safety factors and with control valves and fittings to prevent the accidental release of product.

Here, you’ll find a few rules and regulations that Budget Propane follows when installing your propane appliances and tank. Our staff ensure a safe and secure installation.
All propane distributors have the responsibility of inspecting the equipment before it is hooked up to the tank. We recommend that you consult our staff before doing the installation yourself. Propane installations are regulated by the Natural Gas and Propane Installation Code CSA International B 149.1 – 00 and the Storage and handling of Propane Gas code CSA International B 149.2 – 00. In Quebec, standards and installation monitoring are the responsibility of the “Régie du Bâtiment du Québec” and in Ontario, it is the Technical Standards and Safety Authority.
Moreover, it is possible some municipalities may have adopted regulations of their own to meet the requirements of city planning and fire safety services. We recommend that you find out more from your municipality before permanently installing your tanks.
Minimum distance to install a tank
Minimum distance in ft (m) between tank of propane capacity less than 474 liters:
- 3 ft. (1 m) from building opening (door, crawl space opening, windows, exhaust dryer etc).
- 10 ft. (3 m) from source of ignition (air conditioner, heat pump, intake to direct appliance, central AC compressor, electric plug, Hydro Quebec counter).
- No minimum distance between tank and property line, adjacent concrete or masonry building wall with no openings within the specified clearance.
- Maximum distance of 100 ft. (30 m) from the tank to the delivery truck for the tank fill up. Please make sure that we have no obstruction between the tank and the delivery truck.
Helpful hint: For easier access to your cylinder or tank the path must always be uncluttered. In the winter, don’t forget to clear the snow on the path.
Container installation
This type of container answers most of our customers needs.
Whether it’s for a pool heater, water heater, fireplace, radiator and/or central air furnace, the 420 lbs (123 gal. USWG or 454 litres) tank assures the customer his or her autonomy during those long winter cold spells.
Furthermore, our automatic delivery service ensures our customers never run out of gas.
Did you know that: To calculate your appliance’s consumption, you must be aware that one litre of propane represents the thermal capacity of 24,267 btu/hour. Therefore, if you own a 40,000 btu propane fireplace and you use it at full capacity, your consumption will be 1.6 litres of propane per hour, non-stop.
